Darjeeling Sixth Schedule meeting today
Special Correspondent
KOLKATA: Leaders of regional parties except the Gorkha National Liberation Front [GNLF] are expected to oppose the Centre’s move to grant the Sixth Schedule status to the Darjeeling hills on Thursday before the Parliamentary standing committee on Home Affairs.
The parties, who have no representation in the panel, have been invited by the secretariat of the Rajya Sabha to present their views on the provisions of the Bills before the standing committee.
Most of them are demanding a separate State of Gorkhaland to be carved out of West Bengal’s Darjeeling hills. The GNLF, however, is the principal party in the region.
Through a non-official motion, the West Bengal Assembly on Wednesday urged the Centre to ensure that the Bills are passed in the Parliament’s budget session. An all-party delegation will be going to the capital to impress on the Centre the need to expedite the process.
