Thiruvananthapuram: Three persons were killed and 12 injured, five of them seriously, when a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus collided head-on with a utility vehicle near Vamanapuram on M.C. Road on Wednesday. Those killed and injured were travelling in the utility vehicle. The rural police said the accident occurred at 7.40 a.m. The utility vehicle was proceeding from Kallara to a construction site in Pothencode with 15 labourers. The KSRTC bus was on its way from Thiruvananthapuram to Munnar. The deceased were identified as Anto Fernandes, 48, of Anchumulakunnu, Kallara; Indira, 45, Mundanikkara, Kallara; and the driver of the utility vehicle, Sreekanth, 22, of Vamanapuram who succumbed to his injuries at a private medical college hospital at Venjaramoodu. Of the 15 injured, five are in the intensive care unit and the remaining have been shifted to a ward of a private medical college hospital. The rural police said the KSRTC bus driver was trying to avoid a collision with a speeding private bus going from Vamanapuram to Kalamachal and this resulted in the accident. Minister for Transport Mathew T. Thomas who was passing through M.C. Road supervised the rescue operations. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to relatives after the post-mortem at Government Medical College Hospital here. The Venjaramoodu police have registered a case. The police have taken the KSRTC and the private bus into custody.
