People-friendly: The Regional Transport Office in the city that has been fully computerised. — Thiruvananthapuram: The office of the Regional Transport Officer (RTO), fully computerised under the Rs.47.87-crore Fully Automated Services of Transport Department (FAST) project, has started providing fast and quality service to motorists in the city. As many as 11 front-end counters have been set up to provide hassle-free service to the motorists. However, only nine counters will function for the time-being owing to staff shortage. The cumbersome procedure of moving from one counter to another to pay cash and submit application forms has been scrapped. Set up in an area of 5,000 sq ft, the office, on the second floor of the Transport Bhavan at Fort, is on the lines of new generation banks. Electrical and civil works were undertaken to give a new look to the interiors. The flooring was also changed. Adequate chairs have been provided for the motorists. As many as 70 new computers have been provided. “All types of service will be available across the counters. The motorists can submit the application forms and remit fees in the same counter,” K.A. George, RTO, Thiruvananthapuram, said. As the counters close by 1 p.m. on all working days, the department is thinking of setting up an extension counter from 8.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. to cater to the needs of office-goers. Mr. George said all services will be made available at the extension counter. In addition to a public relations officer, the office will have a help desk. All application forms of the Motor Vehicles Department will be made available at the desk. The introduction of a token system will prevent crowding in front of the counters. Machines have already been installed for queue management. A touch screen kiosk will be installed soon. CALLS shiftedAlong with the computerisation, the authorities have shifted the Computer-Aided Learners Licence System (CALLS) to the second floor, under the direct control of the RTO. At a time, five persons can undertake the test to get the learner’s licence. CALLS will function from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition to the RTO, the Joint Regional Transport Officer, Motor Vehicle Inspectors, Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspectors and the Senior Superintendent have been provided with spacious rooms. The needs of the staff have also been taken into account. A dining hall, a waiting room and adequate toilets have been provided. The Hyderabad-based Electronics Corporation of India is executing a project aimed at making the 62 offices of the department ‘paperless’ through its technology partner, Terrasoft. The formal inauguration of the office will be held later.
