Beyond capacity: Sathaiyar dam has been overflowing since Wednesday.

MADURAI: The torrential rain that continued for the third day marooned many residential areas, submerged crops and left roads battered in the district.

According to an official, 64 houses have been fully damaged and 162 partially damaged in different parts of the district. Revenue officials have provided safe shelters for those who lost their homes. The Fire and Rescue Service personnel took around 20 persons to safety from two residential areas. So far, rain has claimed two lives in the district.

Residential areas in Usilampatti and Chellampatti unions were the worst affected as rain water surrounded houses.

Potholes and craters on city roads made life difficult for the motorists. Besides, vehicular movement on the Madurai-Melur highway continued to be suspended for the second day following a breach on the road near Therkkutheru.

A breach on the Thanichiyam-Alanganallur road which was not repaired for the second day put the residents in over 10 villages to inconvenience.

The surplussing Sathaiyar dam is a threat for many residential areas including those along the mouth of Vandiyur tank.

Stating that over 1,000 acres of paddy and cane crops were submerged, a PWD engineer warned that the situation would worsen if the rain continued for another day.
