Thiruvananthapuram: Care Plus, an NGO which offers palliative care services to poor cancer patients at the Regional Cancer Centre, is distributing special Christmas hampers to the families of 50 selected poor patients under its care. Each of the hampers contains cake, honey, jam, squash, dates, bread, pickles, oranges and other usual provisions, including rice, dal, green gram, oil, sugar, tea, rava, atta, maida and a health-mix supplement. “We decided to include some goodies in the hamper as most of the homes have small children and we wanted them to have a feel of Christmas. Sponsors have come forward to take up this project,” a Care Plus functionary said. On the occasion of Christmas, as part of its rehabilitation packages for the families of patients who are in terminal stages, Care Plus is also distributing six sewing machines to selected families. Three families will be given financial assistance to start small self-help enterprises like bunk shops. The houses of five bed-ridden patients would be thatched by Care Plus.
