Madikeri: Kodagu Zilla Panchayat has sought Rs. 51.8 crore for distribution among various departments under it with a view to taking up development works, apart from meeting the wage component, during 2008-09. A draft proposal was approved by the zilla panchayat at its meeting recently, according to information received here. More funds have been requested for departments such as education, health and family welfare, women and child development and rural development. The grant sought is higher than that of the current year (by Rs. 4.34 crore). The grant received during the current year was Rs. 47.46 crore of which the State’s contribution was Rs. 27.61 core and the Centre’s Rs. 19.84 crore. During 2008-09, the zilla panchayat sought a grant of Rs. 33.17 crore from the State Government and Rs. 18.62 crore from the Centre. According to the draft approved by the zilla panchayat, Rs. 14.50 crore is expected to go towards the salary component. In the 2008-09 plan, the panchayat has sought Rs. 11.13 crore for rural development, Rs. 976 lakh for primary and secondary education, Rs. 554.80 lakh for women and child welfare, Rs. 497 lakh for health and family welfare, Rs. 342.95 lakh for housing programmes, Rs. 270 lakh for watershed development works, Rs. 174 lakh for roads and bridges, Rs. 156.70 for agriculture, Rs. 145.35 lakh for backward communities development, Rs. 142 lakh for medical services, Rs. 134.65 lakh for rural water supply, Rs. 117.75 lakh for animal husbandry, Rs. 99.85 lakh for Scheduled Castes welfare under the Social Welfare Department and Rs. 66.75 lakh for the Scheduled Tribes welfare under the same department, Rs. 70 lakh for the special component plan, Rs. 64.50 lakh for tribal sub-plan, Rs. 56.20 lakh for youth services and sports, and Rs. 21 lakh for cottage industries, among others.
