Ramanujan’s contribution to number theory recalled

THANJAVUR: The fifth international conference on ‘Number theory, theoretical physics and special functions’ got under way at Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) University at Kumbakonam on Thursday.

The meet, held at Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre, was inaugurated by Prof. Michel Waldschmidt of Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris.

Prof. Ben Green, Hershel Smith Professor of Mathematics, Cambridge University, England, was honoured with the SASTRA-Ramanujan Award for 2007.

University Vice-Chancellor R. Sethuraman said the annual award carried a cash component of $10,000. It was given to a young mathematician for his/her outstanding contribution to number theory.

A high-level committee, comprising reputed mathematicians, headed by Alladi Krishnasamy, selected the deserving candidate.

In his inaugural address, Prof. Waldschmidt threw light on the outstanding contribution made by Srinivasa Ramanujan to the field of mathematics in general and the number theory in particular.

He appreciated SASTRA’s efforts to encourage research work of high quality in Ramanujan mathematics.

Earlier, Prof. Srinivasa Rao, conference convener, welcomed the participants.

Prof. Balakrishnan proposed a vote of thanks. S. Seshadri, Dean, Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre, took part.

Scholars from the United States, France, England, Australia and the Netherlands are taking part in the two-day conference.
