HYDERABAD: The Backward Classes Joint Action Committee has proposed to launch a State-wide agitation to protest against the constitution of a committee by the State government to look into the demand of Kapu, Telaga, Balija and Ontari communities for inclusion among the backward classes. JAC convener and former Member of Parliament T. Bala Goud said the demand of the communities was unjustified as the Supreme Court and High Court had struck it down in the past. The government went against the court verdicts by announcing the committee. Moreover, the committee was being constituted in addition to the State Backward Classes Commission which was already seized of the matter. Mr. Goud said the BCs had opposed clubbing of Kapus with them historically as the latter did not fulfil the criteria of social, economic and political backwardness. The National Backward Classes Commission had also rejected the demand of the communities. He also said the demand was unconstitutional because it was linked to securing political power. He criticised the government for announcing the committee with the intention of creating a wedge between BCs and Kapus.
