New museum in Chitradurga to be ready by March

Staff Correspondent

Chitradurga: The longstanding demand of historians and antique lovers of Chitradurga will soon be fulfilled when the city museum is relocated to the new building coming up near the Chitradurga Fort.

The Department of Archaeology and Museums is constructing a new building inside the filter house premises near the fort at an estimated cost of Rs. 20 lakh. The construction is expected to be completed by March, said assistant curator H.C. Kumar.

The present museum located at Rangenbagilu was set up in 1951 by a historian, the late Hullur Srinivas Jois. He was passionate about antiques, several of which he stored in two rooms near Rangenbagilu with the permission of the Government. The museum was inaugurated by the Maharaja of Mysore Chamarajendra Wadiyar.

Since the two rooms were inadequate to showcase the numerous artefacts that have been collected over the years, the priceless pieces have been kept in a haphazard manner. Historians such Srishail Aradhya have been demanding the relocation of the museum so that the exhibits could be presented in a better manner. The museum has over 700 ancient, valuable articles.

Several ancient idols have been placed outside the museum on the pavement next to an open gutter.

The department is also trying to collect more antiques from the people of the district. Mr. Kumar said he was trying to convince people to donate antiques to the museum.
