Scheme to be implemented from January 1 and will be effective up to March 31 Plans on to maintain Municipal Assessment Book to give unique identification codes to owners NEW DELHI: Giving a leeway to property tax offenders, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Thursday introduced an amnesty scheme for people shying away from paying property tax fearing heavy penalty and interest. According to MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta, a 50 per cent rebate on outstanding interest will be given to property tax payers. The scheme will be implemented from January 1 and will be effective up to March 31. “Even after implementation of the Unit Area Method, the number of people who have filed property tax returns is about 7 lakh while the number of properties are estimated to be around 15 lakh. In many cases, people are evading tax because of the interest component that has gone up. The amount of interest discourages taxpayers from getting their ex-parte cases rectified and clearing the tax amount. “The general amnesty scheme will offer a 50 per cent rebate on outstanding interest and no penalty will be levied in such cases,” said Mr. Gupta. He said the civic body was also planning to maintain a Municipal Assessment Book to give a unique property identification code to all owners. “Several teams are being constituted to carry out a survey of properties. Each team will be led by a ward junior engineer while the area inspector of the Property Tax Department will act as working guide. The survey will take two to three months.” Mr. Gupta also said that as a result of its efforts to recover property tax, the Delhi Power Company Limited has agreed to deposit Rs.15 crore as outstanding arrears of property tax due against the erstwhile Delhi Electric Supply Undertaking. “We have also recovered Rs.2.7 crore from the Indian Trade Promotion Organisation,” he added.
