NGO seeks probe into bauxite mining lease issue
Staff Reporter
Samata to approach court of law if proper field-based survey is not undertaken
VISAKHAPATNAM: Samata, a voluntary organisation, has sought a probe into the circumstances leading to grant of mining lease by the Ministry of Mines to extract bauxite ore in Jerrila hill range, which falls in a scheduled area.
In a representation sent to J.P. Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Mines, with copies to other officials concerned, Samata executive director Ravi Rebbapragada referred to reports published in various newspapers on how survey team was not allowed to visit the bauxite mining sites and misrepresentation of facts by the AP Mineral Development Corporation to get mining lease in three blocks of Jerrila. He said: “We also demand that a proper field based survey is undertaken, considering all aspects of rules and regulations and the points in the additional terms of reference as suggested by the expert appraisal committee (mining) with due diligence and only then the mining lease be considered.
Kindly intimate us the action taken on this representation by the officers concerned or we will be compelled to approach an appropriate court of law for seeking justice.”
