This Day That Age
The annual report of the Children’s Film Society shows that some progress has been made in the matter of producing films specially adapted to the requirements of children in this country. It is really encouraging to know that almost the first Indian film of this kind should have won the first prize at the International Film Festival in Venice in the children’s section. Here is a good field for governmental and private enthusiasm. The importance of the cinema is widely recognised by educationists, social workers and others. Children form a specially impressionable audience and the cinema can be put to very good use, indeed, in educating them. A social consciousness can be instilled into them by the medium of films. Facts can be made easier for assimilation with the help of films and the pictures will be a valuable adjunct to text-books. In this connection producers would do well to bear in mind Mr. Y.B. Chavan’s wise statement that “a children’s film is a film that interests children.” The didactic element is important: but no less so is the entertainment factor. Children take their teachers and media of education quite seriously; and many a harassed parent knows how difficult it is to convince a child that teacher can make an occasional slip.
