Welcome step

This refers to the editorial “A step forward in Malaysia” (Dec. 20). The Malaysian government’s withdrawal of attempt-to-murder charges against the citizens of Indian origin, who took out a rally defying a court order, is a welcome step. It should deal with the situation in a pragmatic manner without affording scope for communal forces to exploit the situation. Hardcore Hindraf leaders have managed to get international attention but they must act in a more responsible manner to get the Tamils their due.

J. Churchill,

Thiruvarur

Hindraf’s commingling of genuine grievances of ethnic Indians with what appears to be its hidden agenda of raising passions over the demolition of Hindu temples is indeed a threat to the Malaysian society. Those who were misled into being represented by Hindraf are to blame for the protests assuming such proportions. So is the Malaysian Indian Congress for its poor judgment of the issue.

L. Santhosh,

Bangalore
