State and education

Nobel laureate Amartya Sen has aptly pointed out the importance of the state’s role in education. While being proud of having a high percentage of youth population, India can leverage it only if its children have access to education. Politicians raise a hue and cry over higher education but primary education is given the least importance. Our policymakers should actually work towards extending primary education to the rural masses.

S. Ramani,

Professor Sen is right in saying private schools cannot meet the deficiencies in basic education. But one wonders whether the government which is following the LPG — liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation — economy model will see the point. In this context, the services rendered by missionaries in the field of education deserve special mention. Unfortunately, the basic education sector does not generate income which is why the private entrepreneur does not invest in it.

Chennai
