Politics of excess

The article “The politics of excess” by Choty-Anne Thomas (Open Page, Dec. 16) was almost a literary essay. It was beautiful in language and passage. It is difficult to imagine that her views will have an impact on incidents of the kind she points to as examples of degeneration of values.

The purpose of writing this letter is to draw the attention of young readers who might have missed the article to read it and practise writing on social issues in a language and style that is almost extinct. The sensitivity of the youth to the social issues that are against our cultural values and their expression on them are the only hope of preserving the values that have formed part of our country for centuries.

V. Ramprakash,

The article was an excellent piece of writing, truly reflecting the excess prevailing in society today. Everything today boils down to who owns a bigger television, a smaller mobile phone, or a cosier sofa. How a person flaunts his wealth is what defines his position in society. Competition in workplace is also about earning more than your colleague, not about helping your company grow.

S. Sudhir Kumar,

Hyderabad
