Raichur: The survey work on the comprehensive improvement of basic facilities in Raichur city, taken up under financial assistance from the Asia Development Bank (ADB), has commenced with the arrival of consultants for ADB here on Wednesday.

The ADB assisted scheme was sanctioned to Raichur city a few years back by the State Government along with other selected urban local bodies in the State.

Components

With an estimated allocation of Rs. 50.50 crore for Raichur city, the scheme envisages improvement of five major components, including sewerage and sanitation, urban drainage, water supply infrastructure, urban transportation and poverty alleviation in slum localities in addition to the development of non-municipal infrastructure.

Of the total estimated cost, Rs. 10 crore each had been reserved for augmentation of drinking water supply and improvement of roads, Rs. 24 crore for underground drainage system, Rs. 5 crore for open drains and culverts and the remaining funds reserved for poverty alleviation programme to improve slums in the city and other non-municipal development works, including consultancy fee.

Apart from 60 per cent loan assistance from the ADB, the State Government has to release 32 per cent of the total cost of the scheme and remaining 8 per cent will be born by the local urban body. The Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) has been appointed as the implementing agency for the scheme.

The proposed improvement of basic facilities in Raichur city under ADB assistance is expected to be implemented from the second quarter of 2009-10.

A four-member team from Span Consultants Private Limited, Bangalore, consultants for ADB, headed by Naidu, Deputy Team Leader, who arrived here on Wednesday, have started collecting necessary data for conducting a detailed survey on the proposed improvements of basic facilities. Doddamani, Community Development Officer; Devareddy, Design Engineer, and Renukaiah, Procurement Officer, are the other members of the team.

The team, which toured the drinking water head works at Shakthinagar, Rampur and Deosugur areas on Thursday, reviewed the prevailing situation on the drinking water supply in the city.

The team members told The Hindu on Thursday that they have to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) in augmenting water supply in the city based on the projected population for the next 25 years.
