Sangeet Natak Akademi awards announced

NEW DELHI: The general council of Sangeet Natak Akademi has selected 33 eminent persons for the Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar (Akademi awards) for the year 2007.

In the field of music, the eight artists chosen are Vidyadhar Vyas and Govardhan Mishra for Hindustani vocal, Nandan Mehta for Hindustani instrumental (tabla), Ramoo Prasad Shastri for Hindustani instrumental (violin), B. Krishnamoorthy for Carnatic vocal, Vidya Sankar for Carnatic instrumental (veena), S.R.D. Vaidyanathan for Carnatic instrumental (nagaswaram) and Khayyam (Mohammad Zahoor Hashimi) for creative and experimental music.

The eight chosen in the field of dance are Sucheta Bhide Chapekar for Bharatanatyam, Geetanjali Lal for Kathak, Sadanam Krishnan Kutty for Kathakali, Yeleswarapu Nageswara Sarma for Kuchipudi, Ranjana Gauhar for Odissi, Gunakanta Dutta Barbayan for Sattriya, Deepti Omchery Bhalla for Mohiniattam and K. Sivan Nambootiri for other major traditions of dance/dance theatre (Koodiyattam).

Theatre persons who have won the award are Reoti Saran Sharma (Hindi), Lalthangfala Sailo (Mizo) and Yumnam Rajendra Singh (Manipuri) for playwriting, N.C. Thakur and Harimadhab Mukherjee for direction, Ramesh Mehta for acting, Mahendra Kumar for Allied Theatre Arts (Scenic Design) and Kolyur Ramachandra Rao for major traditions of theatre (Yakshagana).

For traditional/folk/ tribal music/ dance/ theatre and puppetry, the awards will go to Brindasabi Devi and Gouranga Leela (Manipur), Prahlad Singh Tipania for folk music (Madhya Pradesh), Ram Dayal Munda for tribal dance and music (Jharkhand), Ghulam Mohammad for Dogri folk music (Jammu & Kashmir), Subodh Deb Barma for tribal dance (Tripura), Amar Pal for folk music (West Bengal) and L. Rajappa for puppetry (Puducherry).

Sharafat Abdul Majid Satarmaker of Maharashtra will receive an award for making of musical instruments, while Mukund Lath will be honoured for his contribution to scholarship in performing arts.

Akademi Ratna

The Sangeet Natak Akademi also elected eminent scholar S.K. Saxena as Sangeet Natak Akademi Ratna (Akademi Fellow). The Akademi Ratna carries a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh and the Akademi Puraskar of Rs.50,000 besides a “tamrapatra” and an “angavastram.”
