International drug gang busted
Special Correspondent
MUMBAI: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has busted an international gang extracting pseudo-ephedrine from common medicines for cold and cough and smuggling it to Australia for making amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS), which are fast replacing drugs such as brown sugar and hashish.
“This is the first such case of extracting the drug in India, and what we have seized is probably the first lot,” said NCB Director-General K.C. Verma. NCB officers here seized 290 kg of pseudo-ephedrine and arrested four persons.
One Shaikh Kader Sahib Tajuddin, a Singapore national and the kingpin of the gang, was trying to purchase ephedrine in India but could not succeed.
