State Government has sanctioned Rs.87 crore Additional vents at the Puthur Weir planned TIRUCHI: Tenders for the much-awaited Rs.87-crore flood prevention scheme for Tiruchi city will be floated by January, Transport Minister K.N.Nehru has said. The State Government has recently sanctioned the project which envisages putting in place defences to prevent floods caused by surplus discharges in the Uyyakondan and Kudamuritti rivers in the city. “We expect the work to be executed within a year after the tenders are awarded,” Mr.Nehru said after inspecting water-logged areas in the city along with Collector Ashish Vachhani and Mayor Sarubala R.Tondaiman here on Thursday. The scheme includes several components of a Rs.50-crore project, announced during the previous rule of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which failed to take off for various reasons. City residents have long been clamouring for the execution of the scheme. Public Works Department officials said proposals on 17 components of the scheme had been forwarded for technical sanction. The scheme also envisages construction of additional vents at the Puthur Weir to regulate flood discharges and widening of the Kudamuritti and Uyyakondan rivers. A Rs. 207-crore project for strengthening the bunds of the Cauvery and Coleroon rivers in Tiruchi, Karur and Ariyalur districts is also on the anvil. National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development has sanctioned Rs.197 crore for the project. Mr.Nehru, who inspected Lingam Nagar, a flood-prone area, instructed the PWD officials to explore the feasibility of constructing a circular bund around the colony to prevent the entry of Cauvery water into the area. Mr.Nehru visited water-logged areas in Mela Pandamangalam, Kuzhumani, Vayalur Road, Karumandapam and Kollakulam. He also inspected deweeding of the Kudamuritti and Koraiyar rivers. L. Ganesan, MP, District Revenue Officer A.Nambirajan, Corporation Commissioner T.T.Balsamy, PWD Executive Engineers K.K.Palanisamy (River Conservation Division) and Selvaraj (Ariyar Division) accompanied the Minister.
