KOCHI: The preliminary survey for augmenting the water supply system in the city, the adjoining panchayats and two municipalities has got underway with the survey of the detailed topographic levels and contours of the roads. With an eye on supporting the future population of the city and also the growth of the city into the adjoining municipalities and panchayats, the project of augmenting the water supply to 680 million litres per day will be taken up in the second phase of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) project. Mapping the contours and topography of 30 wards in the city area was completed by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) while the rest of the work has been taken up by WAPCOS, a Delhi-based consulting firm, which has also completed 70 per cent of the survey. The refurbished water supply system is expected to keep in tune with the growing population of the city with the execution of the Smart City and Vallarpadam projects. The existing capacity of 225 mld of water into the city and nearby areas will be augmented in the first phase of the project with the addition of over 150 mld that has already been sanctioned. The second phase of the projects will add on another 285 mld capacity.
