My prayers be heard: A child joins her mother in offering prayers at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium in the city on Bakrid.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Remembering Ibrahim in the Koran who demonstrated his obedience to god by preparing to sacrifice his son, Muslims in the city on Thursday gathered in mosques and ‘Id Gah’ grounds to celebrate Bakrid.

The celebrations began with the traditional ‘niskaram.’ This was followed by talks on the importance and relevance of Bakrid.

At the Palayam Juma Masjid, Imam P.K. Hamsa Moulavi led the prayers that began at 8.30 a.m. After a 10-minute ‘niskaram,’ the Imam delivered his benediction address on Bakrid. “The meat of the sacrificial animals was distributed to all the members of our Jama-ath,” the president of the Palayam Muslim Jama-ath, A. Sheikh Hussain, said here. “The sacrifice is done to commemorate Ibrahim Nabi’s willingness to unquestioningly obey the word of god,” he added.

At the Kesavadasapuram Juma Masjid, it was Panippra Ibrahim Moulavi who led the prayers on Thursday at 9 a.m. The special Bakrid prayers at the Putharikkandam ground, organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Id-Gah committee, began at 7.30 a.m. and were led by Abdul Razak Moulavi. Similar prayers were also held on Thursday morning at the ‘Valia palli’ at Manacaud and at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium.

It was with the theme of ‘world solidarity’ that the Islamic Peace Movement of India (IPMI) celebrated the event. Kerala Tourism Development Corporation Chairman Cherian Philip inaugurated the State-wide celebrations. The State president of the organisation, Kazhakkuttom A. Nazmuddin, presided over the inaugural ceremony. People cutting across faiths participated in the inaugural ceremony, a press note issued here said. As part of the celebrations, the faithful exchanged greeting cards and ‘friendship laces’ at Masjids and other locations in the city. Id kits were distributed and meetings were organised by the IPMI in all the taluk centers in the State. On the occasion, friendship messages were sent to temples and churches in the State, the press release said. The state-wide message campaign was inaugurated here by Panakkad Syed Abdul Jabbar Shihab Thangal, the press note added. Under the auspices of the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, an Id-Christmas meeting will be organised here at 4 p.m. on December 21. The meeting will be inaugurated by N.K. Premachandran.
