Government staff in city to serve strike notice

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Non-gazetted employees of the State government in Hyderabad have threatened to go on an indefinite strike from January 27 in support of their demand for hike in House Rent Allowance (HRA) following upgradation of Hyderabad as A1 city.

The coordination committee of employees, teachers and workers announced on Thursday that it would serve the strike notice on Chief Secretary J. Harinarayan on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference here, committee leaders V. Gopal Reddy, D. Sudhakar and others said the staff would participate in lunch-hour demonstrations before their offices on December 29, a rally on January 4 and a major dharna in the city on January 23. If the government did not concede their demand by then, they would go on an indefinite strike. About 70,000 employees working in various establishments in the limits of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation would take part.

They said the demand for payment of HRA at 30 per cent with retrospective from April 16 (when Hyderabad was upgraded) was pending since September when Greater Hyderabad was upgraded as A1 city. The Central government employees and officers of all-India services were being paid 30 per cent HRA for the last three months, but the State government did not extend the facility to its staff.

They also said several representations to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to enhance the rate went in vain. The Finance Department wrongly advised him that the rate could be hiked when the salaries of the staff were restructured by the ninth Pay Revision Commission (PRC) in July next year, they said and expressed apprehensions whether their salaries based on PRC recommendations would be revised in time.
