The 66 kV sub-station built by ABB Built in 17 months at a cost of Rs.35.14 crore NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on Thursday commissioned the first electric sub-station to supply electricity to a part of its Phase II network. The sub-station, apart from acting as a stand-by for the Dwarka-Indraprastha Line, will supply electricity to the Anand Vihar and Ashok Nagar lines of the Metro currently under construction. The 66 kV sub-station has been built by ABB Limited at Indraprastha using seven gas-insulated switchgears imported from Germany that require less space compared to conventional sub-stations and are also cost-effective. A daunting task“The sub-station has been built in 17 months at a cost of around Rs.35.14 crore. The civil construction was a daunting task as 20,000 metric tones of garbage lying in the area when land was taken over had to be removed and the area refilled for construction to take place,” said a DMRC official. At present, the DMRC power supply demand is met by five sub-stations, which are located along the three operational Lines. These are two sub-stations on Line I at Kashmere Gate and Rithala, one on Line II at New Delhi and two on Line III at Subhash Nagar and Dwarka. Feeder post“Besides these sub-stations, the DMRC has also tied up with Northern Railway and set up a feeder post at Shahdara that can take care of an extreme emergency situation enabling trains to move to their respective stations on Line I,” the officials said. The officials also claimed that of the 20-25 gas-insulated switchgears type sub-stations available in the country, the DMRC alone has three -- at New Delhi, Dwarka and Indraprastha. It will be commissioning eight more sub-stations to meet the power supply needs of various lines in Phase II.
