Thiruvananthapuram
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State government has come under pressure from NGOs and other groups following the Chief Justice reportedly turning down the demand for a High Court Bench in the capital. In a press note issued here on Thursday, the Capital City Development Forum said the Central government and the Kerala High Court were bound to set up a Bench in Thiruvananthapuram. “The original High Court in the capital was relocated to Kochi after the merger of Travancore and Kochi, leaving behind a Bench in Thiruvananthapuram. The Bench ceased to function when the State came under administrator’s rule. P.S. Rao was the administrator then. It is only a question of restoring a facility that was lost at that time,” it said. The press note said the Chief Justice’s letter to the Government was distressing. “Kerala is justified in raising the demand for a Bench in the capital. “The Assembly had twice adopted a unanimous resolution to establish a Bench with filing powers. It is up to the government to press for the demand,” the note said. The forum said the citizens of Thiruvananthapuram would stand by the government to get the demand conceded. The Trivandrum Residents’ Apex Council (TRAC) also urged the State government to exert pressure on the Centre to get the proposal cleared. A communication issued by TRAC here on Thursday said the establishment of the Bench would depend on the political will of the LDF government. A press note quoting TRAC president Amaravila Ramakrishnan Nair said the council was preparing to launch an agitation on the issue.
