GOING GREEN: Chief Justice of Madras High Court A.P.Shah planting a sapling on the High Court premises as part of the Green Courts 2008 project, on Thursday. CHENNAI: Court premises in the State are to become greener with the inauguration of “Green Courts 2008” on Thursday. According to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Tamil Nadu, C.K. Sreedharan, saplings would be provided by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. The planting is expected to be completed before the end of the northeast monsoon period. The Special Government Pleader (Forest), S.N.Kirubanandam, said the project, jointly organised by his office and the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, was for planting 2008 saplings in courts in Tamil Nadu, to coincide with New Year. About 300 trees would be planted on the premises of the principal seat of the High Court. Planting the first sapling and inaugurating the programme, Chief Justice A.P. Shah said it was a very innovative project. It was a happy day as during the course of the day 100 trees were to be planted on the premises here, he said. R. Sudhakar, High Court Judge, said the function’s message was that courts had been called upon to protect environment. “We want a better environment in all courts in Tamil Nadu.” The tree planting message should reach all so that every individual planted at least one tree every year. Other High Court Judges and Advocate-General G. Masilamani were among those present on the occasion.
