Billiards & Snooker
HYDERABAD: The big guns — Pankaj Advani and Geet Sethi — moved into the knock-out phase in the seniors snooker with methodical wins in crucial final round league matches of the Seaways Group-sponsored National billiards and snooker championship at Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy Indoor Stadium here on Thursday. World champion Advani was a more comfortable 58-17, 49-44, 76-23 winner over Ashish Danda (Punjab) while Sethi warded off a spirited challenge from Amith Saboo of Maharashtra to record a 89-22, 58-47, 68-44 win in a late evening match. One of the highlights of the day was Rajasekar Girish’s impressive performance. The Tamil Nadu player first got rid off Subrata Das of Orissa 62-11, 66-29, 60-52 and then beat I.V. Rajeev (AP) 53-11, 35-57, 67-21, 85-0 to top his group and qualify for the knock-out phase. For the host, 23-year-old Hemanth Kumar provided the cheers, qualifying for the knock-out phase. Correction: It was Nadeem Ahmed of Tamil Nadu who stunned Geet Sethi in a seniors snooker league match on Wednesday and not Nadeem Aziz of Karnataka as was reported in these columns on Thursday, based on the original official results.
