Efforts to promote care of HIV infected lauded

Positive changes in awareness level and knowledge in Karur

Drug distribution units in two hospitals planned

Sufficient number of kits to conduct deliveries

KARUR: A district-level dissemination meet on decentralisation of HIV care through the “Integrated management of adolescent and adult illness” (IMAI) project was conducted here recently.

Solidarity and Action Against The HIV Infection in India (SAATHII), a non-governmental organisation, is implementing the project in the district and the whole programme is supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society (TANSACS). Under the project, 74 doctors and 243 paramedical staff from the district’s primary health centres and general hospitals underwent training in specific modules since April.

Delivering the presidential address, Collector T.N. Venkatesh said many positive changes in HIV-related awareness, knowledge and sensitivity had come about among health care providers in the district due to the SAATHII-IMAI project. He hoped that the TANSACS plan to set up ARV drug distribution centres at two hospitals in the district would reduce the patient load at the Karur ART centre.

Mr. Venkatesh shared the positive feedback on the IMAI project received from TANSACS Project Director Supriya Sahu and WHO HIV Programme Officer Po-Lin Chan. He said Karur was the only district where all PHCs had been provided with PEP (post exposure prophylaxis) kits supplied by TANSACS. There was sufficient number of delivery kits to conduct safe deliveries regardless of known HIV status.

L. Ramakrishnan, Country Director, SAATHII, provided an overview of the organisation and the IMAI project, which aimed at ensuring universal access to quality HIV care and stigma-free treatment. He also explained the future plans of SAATHII in the district with regard to mentorship, on-site supervision and decentralised access to drugs and nutrition.

D.C.S. Reddy, National Project Officer from WHO Country Office, New Delhi, said Karur was a model district in implementing the IMAI module successfully, enabling health care providers offer unstigmatised care to people living with HIV. The Karur IMAI project was the first demonstration of IMAI’s effectiveness in the Indian context.

Praising the efforts of the district administration and TANSACS in ensuring the project’s success, he said the IMAI could now be scaled up to the remaining districts of Tamil Nadu and other States.

Dr. Reddy handed over a list of IMAI-trained doctors, nurses, counsellors, and lab technicians to the Collector.

Project Manager S. Swaminathan facilitated the dissemination meeting.
