‘Plea bargaining’ to help undertrails

BERHAMPUR: A workshop on ‘Plea Bargaining’ was organised for the undertrials in the Berhampur circle jail on Friday in the presence of justice A.S.Naidu of Orissa High Court.

A new chapter on ‘plea bargaining’ was inserted in the Criminal Procedure Code (1973) through the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2005. A notification to make this Act effective was made in July 2006. Its main aim was to help large number of under trials lodged in jails and to reduce long pendency of cases in courts.

Speaking at the workshop, Justice Naidu expressed that most undertrials languishing in State prisons are still ignorant about ‘plea bargaining’.
