Groundnut crop to equal extent totally destroyed: Collector

Chilli and cotton crops also damaged

Realisation of water appreciable in major tanks

ARIYALUR: Samba crop on 1,550 hectares were submerged and groundnut in equal extent of area completely destroyed in the recent showers in the district, Collector V.M. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam said on Friday.

After assessing the damage, he said about 14,900 hectares were brought under samba. Following the heavy downpour, about 1,550 hectares were submerged.

The exact assessment of damage could be arrived at only after the waters receded.

Of the total 2,700 hectares under groundnut, about 1,550 hectares had been damaged. Chilli in 350 hectares (total area 600 hectares) and cotton in 50 hectares (170 hectares) were also damaged. The worst hit were gingili growers, whose seeds in 50 hectares had been totally destroyed.

Mr. Nayagam said crops in about 330 acres — 130 acres in Tirumanur and Elakurichi villages and 200 acres in Sullankudi village — were below water.

Realisation of water was appreciable in 22 major tanks out of the total 26 in the district.

The level in Andi Odai, Sukkiran tank, Karaivetti tank and Kallur tank was up to the brim. The heavy downpour had led to a sharp rise in the water level of 19 minor tanks in and around Ariyalur.

Precautionary move

The district administration had taken precautionary measures to meet any emergency.

A total of 2,000 sand-bags had been stocked at Ramanallur. An action plan had been drawn up jointly by various departments including Fire Service and Rescue, Revenue, Police and Health.
