PANAJI: The Congress-led Government in Goa is facing flak from within the ruling coalition over the special economic zones (SEZ) controversy. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), one of the major partners, has reiterated its demand that Chief Minister Digambar Kamat scrap all the SEZs. Referring to the statement made by Mr. Kamat at the Goa Liberation Day ceremony on Wednesday that the Government would take into consideration the people’s views before taking a final decision, State NCP president Wilfred de Souza said on Thursday: “Don’t study and examine SEZs. Just scrap them immediately. Goa does not need a single SEZ.” The former Tourism Minister, Matanhy Saldanha, a leader of the front spearheading the agitation against SEZs, on Thursday led a delegation to Governor S.C. Zamir and demanded that the Government immediately scrap all SEZs. All the seven product-specific SEZs, of which two have been notified, are facing opposition. SuspendedWorks at the project sites have been suspended following violent disruptions from villagers and groups opposing SEZs. The State Cabinet’s sub-committee, under the chairmanship of Mr. Kamat, is studying the issue and its decision is expected next month.
