Selection process begins for new AIIMS director

NEW DELHI: The Centre will initiate the process of selection of a new Director for the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here.

However, a final decision and announcement will be made only after the Supreme Court disposes of the issue of removal of P. Venugopal as Director following the passage of the AIIMS (Amendment) Bill, 2007. This decision was taken at an Institute Body meeting of the AIIMS here on Thursday.

Briefing reporters, Union Health and Family Welfare Secretary Naresh Dayal said that as the selection process was likely to take 5-6 months, the Deputy Director (Administration), AIIMS, had been asked to invite nominations, nationally and internationally, in keeping with the practice. The acting Director T.D. Dogra was intentionally kept out of the selection process as he could be a contender, Mr. Dayal said. Dr. Venugopal challenged the AIIMS (Amendment) Act, 2007, in the Supreme Court and the next hearing is scheduled for January 2008.

The Institute Body agreed to allow successful students to take their degrees from the AIIMS, even if a convocation was not held as scheduled in February every year, to allow them to pursue higher studies. On recruitment of non-academic senior and junior residents, Mr. Dayal said the Institute would follow the existing government policy on job reservation.

A. Sampath Kumar, who was removed from his post following the death of a young boy allegedly due to negligence, would be reinstated as head of the Cardio-Thoracic Department, the general body meeting decided.

Rejecting the report of the AIIMS’ internal committee, constituted to look into the Thorat Committee recommendation that alleged caste-based discrimination in the Institute, the general body meeting asked the Health Secretary to find ways of implementing the recommendations of the Throat panel, and revive the “non-functional” grievances cell.
