To have personnel from Puducherry Armed Police, India Reserve Battalion Sanction funds to modernise police force
PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry government plans to establish an anti-terrorist unit of the territorial police, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has said. Announcing the government plan while addressing the Chief Minister’s Conference on Internal Security at New Delhi on Thursday, Mr. Rangasamy said the separate unit would be formed by inducting personnel from the Puducherry Armed Police and the India Reserve Battalion, who were trained in commando operation. The government also proposed to upgrade the Police Training School into a full-fledged training college, he said adding that augmentation of institutional and administrative infrastructure was under consideration. Revamp planPointing out the changed security scenario and threat perception that faced the country, Mr. Rangasamy said the government planned to revamp the Special Branch and the intelligence gathering machinery. As part of steps initiated to modernise the force, as many as 450 posts in various ranks of the police personnel were proposed, the Chief Minister said. He urged the Union government to take immediate steps to sanction funds earmarked for modernisation of the police force in the Union Territory. Awaiting Rs. 12.5 croreOut of the Rs. 66 crore earmarked, the government had received Rs 6.24 crore for 2006-07 and a sum of Rs 12.5 crore sanctioned for the current year was yet to be received, Mr. Rangasamy said. He also appealed for more funds to establish Coastal Police Stations (CPS’s) in the four regions of Union Territory. He said the sanctioned amount of Rs 24.50 lakh to establish the CPS’s was inadequate for the construction of buildings as per the specifications and design recommended by the Bureau of Police Research and Development. Mr. Rangasamy also sought approval for the Union Territory’s proposal to set up one more Traffic Police Station and Women Police Station.
