Matsyafed fair a big draw

FRESH AND CHEAP: Fish for sale.

KOLLAM: The Matsyafed’s Christmas fair at Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation’s Labham Super Market complex in Chinnakada is a big draw. At a time when consumers are reeling under a price rise burden, the fair has brought much relief during the Christmas festival.

At the fair, customers can purchase an array of fishes cleaned and neatly packed in different weights suiting all pockets. The fish varieties include seer fish, squid, cuttle fish, prawns, shrimp, oysters, barracuda and other local delicacies. The fishes are directly purchased from the fishermen who catch them.

This gives Matsyafed the advantage of selling fish at a price that is lower than the market price. Fresh catch at a low price is the main attraction for the customers. The fair has been organised through the Value-addition and Market Yojana and the Swarnajayanthi Grama Swarozgar Yojana schemes. Apart from fresh fish, there is a range of value-added seafood products at the fair.
