KANNUR: Two passenger boats built at Steel Industries of Kerala Limited (SILK) unit at Azhikkal here will be launched into waters on December 24. The vessel making unit of SILK here had built two steel boats for the Kerala Water Transport Department (KWTD). The boats will be flagged off by Industries Minister Elamarom Karim at a function at Azhikkal. The KWTD had placed its orders in April this year for six steel boats with a seating capacity of 75 each. Under the Rs.2.25-crore contract, two of the boats should be completed in 100 days. SILK had completed the works within the stipulated time, a press release said. The unit started in 1984 as a ship breaking unit was also taking up works, including steel fabrication and other allied activities. In 1992-93, the unit entered into the task of making small vessels, it said. So far, the unit had constructed 16 small and big vessels for various agencies, including the Ports Department and the Central Institute of Fisheries Technologies, among others.
