Archbishop Rev. Marampudi Joji concerned over attacks on pastors, church property HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy promised on Friday that the government would not take any action on the draft church properties bill without consulting the community leaders. Speaking at Christmas celebrations hosted by him, he said: “The government is with you. I assure you that we will go forward only after arriving at a consensus.” Referring to Dalits who had lost reservations in education and employment for embracing Christianity, Dr. Reddy agreed that it was causing concern. The government would take appropriate action to remove discrimination on the basis of religion, he said while assuring justice. Responding to Archbishop Rev. Marampudi Joji’s request to continue grant-in-aid for educational institutions, he said there were administrative constraints to do so. However, the government would explore all options available, including assistance for them, through the Minority Welfare Department. The Archbishop expressed concern over the attacks on pastors and church property and sought the government’s protection. Legislative Council Chairman A. Chakrapani, several Ministers, Members of Parliament, legislators and prominent Christian leaders were present. Raymond Peter, Managing Director, AP Tourism Development Corporation, welcomed the gathering.
