BHOPAL: New information has surfaced here to counter Opposition leader Jamuna Devi’s latest charge that more heavy vehicles have been acquired by the Chief Minister’s relatives on a “benami” basis and these were being run on a contract basis by a cement company at Rewa. An official source here circulated a note carrying details of trucks, their registration numbers and owners who got eight trucks registered in their names with the Rewa RTO. The numbers of these trucks are the same as those provided by the leader of the Opposition at a press conference here on Wednesday alleging that these trucks belonged to the relatives of the Chief Minister. When one of the truck owners, Jagannath Singh Patel, a resident of Chijwar in Rewa district, was contacted on his cell phone by this correspondent, he said he was not even remotely related to the Chief Minister. He also said that he was a “petty” transporter. Another truck owner, Sanjay Singh, also named as a relative of the Chief Minister in the allegation, did not respond when this correspondent tried to contact him on his mobile. Ms. Jamuna Devi was on tour and not available for comments. However, Ramesh Sahoo, the advocate and complainant in this case, said that the Special Police Establishment of the Lokayukta was now seized of the matter and it was their demand that the scope of the probe into the alleged dumper scam be enlarged to cover all trucks and dumpers registered with the Rewa RTO after November 29, 2005. “It also needs to be investigated how many of these trucks had been purchased as benami property,” he added.
