Officials alerted on disease outbreak

MADURAI: The Health Department has alerted district officials to a possible outbreak of water-borne diseases once the rain lets up and water stagnation occurs.

In a communication to the Deputy Directors of Health Services, the Directorate of Public Health has asked them to prepare a “district-specific micro-plan” and keep emergency medical teams ready.

S. Elango, Additional Director of Public Health, said on Thursday that water-borne diseases might strike after the rain, and care should be taken to make drinking water was safe. “The trend is that diseases like cholera, jaundice and malaria will occur a few days after the rains. Hence, our department officials are instructed to be vigilant.”

Dr. Elango said the Deputy Directors must keep the micro-plan ready so that preventive steps could be taken swiftly. Steps were taken to transport affected people to hospitals in department vehicles.

An adequate number of personnel had been deployed and a control room would function round the clock under the supervision of health inspectors. People could contact the toll free number 1056 to seek medical help or to inform about any disease outbreak in a locality.

The Health Department had also urged the people not to ignore fever but consult a doctor immediately. Drugs were available in all Primary Health Centres, he said.

R. Varadharajan, Madurai District Malaria Officer, said the people should be careful about acute diarrhoeal diseases, typhoid and jaundice. “People should drink boiled water to avoid contracting water-borne diseases.”
