CSI office-bearer elected amidst tension in Nellai

Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI: Amidst complaints of rigging, heated exchange of words and tension, A. Devadoss was elected lay secretary of the Tirunelveli Church of South India Diocese on Friday.

Situation was tense here immediately after election for various positions in the CSI churches across the district was announced as it was contested keenly by two groups led by the outgoing lay secretary A.D.J.C. Dhinakar and Vedhanayagam.

Though Mr. Vedhanayagam was initially fielded to take on Mr. Dhinakar, the CSI Bishop’s relative A. Devadoss was later projected as the candidate for the post.

When polling to elect lay secretary was to begin at Cathedral Church on Friday, supporters of Mr. Dhinakar told the Election Commissioner, Jayam Ponniah, that election could not be conducted in the wake of an interim stay granted by a court.

Supporters of the rival candidate Mr. Devadoss argued that election could be conducted as planned since there was no court stay. When the argument intensified they tried to attack each other and the glass panes of the church were smashed, prompting the police to intervene.

After policemen were deployed on the polling station premises, election was conducted, which finally saw Mr. Devadoss and his team emerging victorious.
