‘Nandigram mirrors Left stand’

Staff Reporter

Thrissur: Medha Patkar, environmentalist, has said that the Nandigram issue reflects the Left’s attitude to neoliberalism.

She was addressing a meet-the-press programme at the Thrissur Press Club on Friday.

“Neoliberalism favours privatisation and rule of the market. Changes in the CPI(M) policies are shocking. We hoped and expected a lot from the CPI(M). In Kerala, we expected the Left Democratic Front government not to promote Special Economic Zones. The Left was with us in our struggles. Its change of stance is unfortunate.”

She alleged that many, including CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, had irresponsibly commented on the Nandigram issue without visiting the place.

“Everyone knows what happened in Nandigram. Many were killed and women raped. I am told that Mr. Vijayan’s remarks on the issues were irresponsible. Some people even alleged that I conspired the killings. Goondas walked about and threatened women they will be fined if they talked to me. All those women had earlier voted for the Left. Party workers were against their own brethren.”
