Move forward: Jiwesh Nandan, National Co-ordinator, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Union Ministry of Power, speaking at the conference on pumps in Coimbatore on Friday.

COIMBATORE: The pumpset industry should move forward with innovative concepts and improved products, Ravindra Pal Bhatia, Managing Director of Mather & Platt Pumps, said here on Friday.

At the national conference on pumps, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, he said marginal improvements in efficiency of pumpsets would not do. The manufacturers should focus on research and development. According to the Hydraulic Institute, 20 per cent energy saving in pumping systems would be possible even with the existing technologies. The world pump market was worth $ 30 billion and efficiency improvement would change the size of the industry.

With increased diversion of agricultural land for bio-fuels, productivity of agricultural lands should go up and pumps would play a vital role. The farms would use more synthetic fertilizers and all outflows from the agricultural lands should be treated. That would again need pumps. Though Coimbatore was mainly manufacturing agricultural pumps the foundries and engineering units here supplied components for industrial pumps too.

So the units here would be able to venture into industrial pumps too.

Jayakumar Ramdass, the event chairman, said the current production of pumps in the country was to the tune of Rs. 3,750 crore and this was expected to grow at the rate of six per cent in two years. Pump exports were growing at 10 per cent during the last two years. With more business opportunities for the sector, Coimbatore manufacturers should tap the potential in the emerging market.

V. Krishnakumar, president of the Indian Pump Manufacturers’ Association, said that India’s share in the global pump market was 3.2 per cent. The industry should focus on innovation and use new materials.

Jiwesh Nandan, National Co-ordinator, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Union Ministry of Power, inaugurated the conference. K. Thangaraj, chairman of the Coimbatore Zone of the CII and C.R. Shanmugasundaram, president of the Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association, also spoke.
