KOCHI: The Kerala region of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made a historic step towards dissemination of information on banking in the regional language. It has become the first region to publish the summary of the RBI annual report for 2006-07 in the local language. The Malayalam version of the summary of the report was released here on Friday. Releasing the book, containing more than 100 pages, Salim Gangadharan, CGM, RBI, Mumbai, said the initiative would be a trendsetter. There was a need for extending the reach of the information on banking and allied sectors to a wider section of people, he said. The translation of the report was a right step in this direction, he added. Mr. Gangadharan also made a presentation on the current financial scenario before a distinguished audience comprising top executives of several banks. Earlier, S. Ramaswamy, Regional Director (Kerala and Lakshadweep), said the policy changes initiated by the RBI had wide ramifications. Different sections of society, including students, were being familiarised with banking procedures and norms. An essay competition for students was recently organised by the apex bank. The RBI had already brought out a few booklets in Malayalam on selected themes such as non-banking financial institutions and bank notes, he said. Mr. Ramaswamy also stressed the need for publishing the regional language version of important speeches made by top management personnel on various occasions.
