BJP demands withdrawal of eviction notices
HYDERABAD: The State Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded withdrawal of eviction notices issued to 1,623 farmers spread over 16 villages in U. Kothapalli mandal of East Godavari district. In a letter to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, State BJP president Bandaru Dattatreya said here on Friday that small and marginal farmers, who mostly belonged to poorer sections of society, had been irrigating the lands for the last 75 years to earn their livelihood.
They had been remitting various levies charged by the government.
He said recently, the farmers were served notices not to raise crops in the lands and also to vacate them, following the orders issued by the AP High Court in the writ petition 2493 of 2006. As a consequence, Revenue officials were not allowing the ryots to enter the lands.
Mr. Dattatreya appealed to Dr. Reddy to intervene in the issue and submit a report on the reality of the situation to the High Court and provide relief to farmers by ordering withdrawal of the notices.
