Passenger train stopped at Irugur or Peelamedu Authorities clear track for Kurla Express Coimbatore: Commuters travelling by the Erode–Tirupur–Coimbatore passenger train are sore over its delayed operation in the mornings. The train caters to the travel needs of a lot of students, besides workers and office-goers from Erode to Tirupur or Coimbatore and those coming from Tirupur to Coimbatore. The passengers are put to lot of hardship owing to the inordinate delay of the train for enabling the other trains to pass through. Single line bottleneckAccording to the secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause K. Kathirmathiyon, the problem persists because of the single line bottleneck between Coimbatore North and Irugur. The line doubling project mooted two decades ago has been progressing at a snail pace and the authorities instead of expediting the work have started harassing the train users citing the same as a reason. The train was originally leaving Erode at 6.30 a.m. and was recently rescheduled to 7 a.m. following demands by workers, students and office goers considering their convenience. Leaving Erode at 7 a.m., it was scheduled to reach Coimbatore by 9.10 a.m. The office-goers and students point out that given the increasing rail traffic ensuring a smooth passage without a single detention will not be possible. What causes pain and concern is the practice of the authorities to stop the train either at Irugur or at Peelamedu almost on a daily basis for nearly 20 to 40 minutes, say passengers. During that period, the authorities clear the track for Kurla Express and Palakkad – Tiruchi Fast Passenger and then give priority to the Erode – Coimbatore passenger thus serving no purpose for the regular commuters, as they will reach Coimbatore North or the Coimbatore Junction only by 10 a.m.
A permanent solution will be to expedite the doubling work. But until then, the authorities could consider stopping all the passing trains for 10 to 15 minutes and give priority to each train based on their schedule rather than detaining one train completely. The passengers suggested that the departure of Kurla Express could be either advanced or delayed by 10 minutes and similarly the Palakkad – Tiruchi Fast Passenger.
