‘Season of Love’ begins
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: Coloured confetti shot into the moonlit sky and balloons sailed away on the night breeze as the ‘Season of Love’ celebration, organised on the campus of St. George’s Anglo Indian School here, was inaugurated on Thursday evening.
A 65-foot Christmas tree towered above visitors. Several young men in Santa Claus costumes with masks and fake beards all askew added colour. Red and white balloons seized by a life of their own or helped by mischievous little hands at an event overwhelmingly attended by children would periodically lose their bonds and drift dreamily into the dark. To emphasise the fact that love was the theme of the season, religious leaders of three religions were present. A.M. Chinnappa, Archbishop of Madras – Mylapore, Balaprajapathi Adigal, Vaikundapeedam, Samithoppu, and Salahuddin Mohamed Ayub Saheb were present.
All India Congress Committee Member Karti P. Chidambaram and Mayor M. Subramanian were among other guests for the day. Several of them released balloons into the night to declare the event open. Attractions at the ‘Season of Love’ celebrations include a Santa House with a Santa Claus giving away gifts to children. The ‘Land of Love’ would also give city residents a chance to give away used toys, clothes or books for distribution among the under-privileged.
