This Day That Age
The Rajya Sabha on December 20 gave its approval to the extension of the Preventive Detention Act for three years from December 31, 1957 after a tense debate. The Opposition tried in vain to limit the extension of the Act to lesser periods than three years. Mr. Bhupesh Gupta, Leader of the Communist Group, hurled a barrage of invectives against the Government and the Congress accusing them of trying to stifle political opposition through the measure. In a spirited defence, Mr. B.N. Datar, Minister in the Ministry of Home Affairs, said that in asking for the extension, Government had been actuated by the best of motives. Otherwise, they could have put the Act permanently on the statute book. If at the end of three years the situation was such as not to warrant its extension, the Act would not be extended.
