Handing over micro credit to corporate sector opposed Street play turns out to be a major attraction TIRUPATI: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has resolved to strengthen the country’s public sector in order to take public utility services like electricity, transport, banking, insurance and telecom to the reach of the common man. At the third day of the party’s 23rd State convention here on Friday, the party flayed the “regressive and anti-people” steps taken by successive TDP and Congress regimes and resolved to extend support to the agitations taken up against privatisation by the working class and public. The national general secretary A.B. Bardhan, secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, State secretary K. Narayana, floor leader Chada Venkata Reddy and State secretariat member T. Lakshminarayana expressed concern over the havoc wrought by economic reforms. The party regretted handing over of the public sector banks to private/foreign enterprises in the garb of acquisitions and shrinking of the number of banks by allowing mergers. The meet warned the government against handing over the micro credit scheme to the corporate sector. For the welfare of women loitering in the unorganized sector as domestic servants and helpers, the party demanded that they be recognized as ‘workers’ and regular salary paid instead. Hitting out at the State for closing down 10 depots of APSRTC, the party criticised the recent attempt to take 1,500 more buses on hire. The party resolved to pressure on the Centre and State to initiate action on diversion of oil and natural gas struck in the KG basin to other areas only after meeting the State’s requirements. The streetplay conducted at the end of the convention turned out to be a major attraction.
