Letters to the Editor
It was very thoughtful on the part of The Hindu to refrain from publishing a colour photograph of the gory incident in the Guwahati zoo, in which two tigers mauled a visitor to death when he put his hand into their enclosure for taking a picture. The tragedy shows that warnings serve little purpose if people do not heed them and do what they want. The incident should, hopefully, make visitors to any zoo alert to the dangers of trespass. P. Prasand Thampy, Thiruvalla The publication of the chilling photograph deserves to be congratulated. Such photographs have an educative value for visitors to zoos who mistake their acts of foolhardiness for bravado, and defy the warnings not to cross the barriers. What words cannot make people understand the blood-curdling picture can. R. Ramachandra Rao, Hyderabad Although a colour picture of the tigers mauling the visitor would have been gory, it would have been more effective in conveying the message. It would have served the purpose of highlighting the extreme danger from wildlife better. D.B.N. Murthy, Bangalore
