CPI(M) has gone back to Stalinist way: BJP

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has gone “back to its basics of Stalinism” vis-À-vis Nandigram, the Bharatiya Janata Party charged on Friday.

The party spokesman Prakash Javadekar was commenting on the second find of graves of unidentified people, believed to have been victims of recent violence in the area, and reacting to an article in the CPI(M) weekly People’s Democracy saying the BJP had gone back to its “divisive agenda.”

“The reality is that the CPI(M) had gone back to its Stalinist way,” Mr. Javadekar told journalists here.

While on the issue of Taslima Nasreen, the CPI(M) had “surrendered” to Islamist fundamentalists to keep its votebank intact, in Nandigram the party crossed all limits of decency, talking about “celebrating the recapture” of Nandigram.

Mr. Javadekar said it was shameful that under a secular and democratic parliamentary system, the Bangladeshi writer was virtually under house arrest in Delhi, fearing attacks by Islamist fundamentalists.

In reply to a question, Mr. Javadekar did not agree that Hindu fundamentalists had restricted the freedom of eminent artist M.F. Husain, who is unable to return to India. “Yes, there are many court cases against Mr. Husain but he is free to come back and get those settled.”

The BJP “welcomed” the reported Deoband “fatwa” asking Muslims not to slaughter cows on the occasion of Id-ul-Zuha.
