They wanted to shift the body of the farmer to DC’s office

CHAMARAJANAGAR: Hundreds of activists belonging to the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS), Hasiru sene and Harave village leaders staged a dharna at Harave-Chamarajanagar Road urging the district administration and the police to allow them to shift the body of farmer Siddaraju to the Deputy Commissioner’s office at the district headquarters,

Chamarajanagar. The police, however, stopped the farmers from shifting the body in a tractor, from his house at Harave to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Obstruction

The police blocked the road and it was in protest of their attitude that the farmers staged a dharna on Harave-Chamarajanagar Road.

Demands

Earlier, the farmers, led by KRRS leaders, held a dharna in front of Siddaraju’s house, demanding the ICICI Bank to give a compensation of Rs. 25 lakh to the farmers’ family and to waive the tractor loan. The protesters also called upon all those who have taken loans from the bank to stop repaying their instalments.

Padayathra

But the ICICI general manager did not arrive till evening.

The village leaders, along with Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha leaders, decided to shift the body in a padayathra from Harave village to the Deputy Commissioner’s office to continue their agitation. Deputy Commissioner Vishwanath Reddy visited Harave village, along with MP Shivanna and Superintendent of Police Srikantappa and tried to convince the farmers to cremate the body.

Security has been tightened at Harave village following the dharna.

Meanwhile, the wife of the dead farmer, Nagarathna, was admitted to the Harave Government Hospital after she fell unconscious.
