Jewellery industry plea on hallmarking rules
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: All India Gems and Jewellery Federation (GJF) has felt that the industry doesn’t have the necessary infrastructure to implement the rule of hallmarking standards. The industry requires 3,000 hallmarking units, while there are only 75 in the country. Each hallmarking unit costs Rs. 2 crore.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, directors of the federation H. Mohanlal Jain and Mohanlal Gupta said that though the industry welcomed the move, the location-specific licence fee ranging from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 25,000 and a few other provisions might turn out to be difficult for it to adhere to.
The Rs. 70,000-crore industry in the country with over 30,000-odd jewellers should not be affected by any new move.
